There is ample parking at the host site. You can also park on 213 Street above if you don't want to drive down the hill to the mine office.
Why no headlamps?
We don't want you blinding people who are passing you. We suggest waist lamps, which can be jerry-rigged from a headlamp if necessary. We will also have lighting throughout the tunnel. You can bring a headlamp just in case and they will be helpful when you're in the aid tent.
Can I count on the temperature?
Inside the mine, it's always around 0˚C. Outside, it will be really variable. We will have large party tents with heaters going the whole time, so you can always come in and thaw yourself a bit. The mine office is only open to staff, volunteers, and for 1st aid purposes. So count on being outside a lot.
How is the air quality in the mine?
Good! Keep in mind that it's 100% humidity and you're basically running in a cave. There is a slight breeze all the time. Occasionally, you will get a whiff of sulphur from the creek that runs beside the track, but it really depends on the day; sometimes it seems strong, others you barely notice. There is often a very slight breeze through the mine from the vent shafts, which helps to clear the air. We will also have an air monitor to make sure there are no air hazards - that's just standard protocol with the BUM. They host thousands of visitors on mine tours each year and there has never been an incident.
How is the race being timed/tracked?
We will be using the Webscorer app with our own timing hardware. This will count the number of loops and give a time stamp for each. There are two timing points, which will be compared to help ensure accuracy.
Is it dusty?
No. The ground is always slightly damp. If you're running your hands along the walls or kicking your feet into the dirt a lot, you might be able to make some dust. You might notice a bit of coal residue on your shoes afterward. You'll want to switch them out before you get in your car and drive away.
Where are the awards and breakfast being held?
At the Bellevue Seniors' Hall. If you go to the top of the mine access road, turn left, and walk a block and a half. There is street parking if you want to drive up.
